Ugandan Olympian Rebecca Cheptegei Burned To Death By Boyfriend

In sad news, Ugandan marathon runner Rebecca Cheptegei died after being set on fire by her boyfriend. It was reported by NWE that on September 1, 2024 Rebecca was “attacked by her boyfriend, Dickson Ndiema, in her home in Kenya… during a disagreement, Ndiema reportedly bought a jerry can of petrol, poured it on her, and set her on fire.” Rebecca was hospitalized as the burns covered 80% of her body. Unfortunately it was confirmed on Setemebr 5, 2024 that she did not survive.

Rebecca was a professional runner and finished 44th in the women’s marathon of the Paris 2024 Olympics. Uganda and Kenya are countries located in the eastern region of the continent of Africa. Uganda is known as ‘The Pearl of Africa’ but unfortunately domestic violence percentages increase year after year. In Kenya, 40.7% of ever-partnered women have experienced physical and/or sexual intimate partner violence, as reported by RAINN.

There will be an arrest made and her boyfriend, Dickson Ndiema, will be charged with murder after his discharge from the hospital from burns he suffered in the incident. Rebecca Cheptegei was 33 years old. We’re praying for Rebecca Cheptegei’s family in this tough time.
