A new episode of “Baby, this is Keke Palmer” features Tyler Perry. The two sit down and discuss how Perry has learned to let go in the writer’s room, training the next generation of filmmakers and choosing yourself. Check it out inside.
Director, producer and writer Tyler Perry sat down with host Keke Palmer on her podcast series, “Baby, this is Keke Palmer.” The two have worked together in the past and Palmer shares how much Perry has inspired her throughout the years.
In the episode, Perry talks about starting writers’ rooms for the first time and how he is laser focused on training up the next generation of filmmakers.
“You kind of write everything,” Palmer comments. “You don’t even have a writer’s room. When you’re juggling all these different hats, what time do you feel when to push back and let someone else come in and help you and assist?”
Perry’s response takes a look at the past two years and how he’s made significant changes to his writing process.
“Over the last two years now, I’ve brought in writers’ rooms and we’ve had them on other, on the sitcoms,” Perry answered Keke. “But now I’ve brought them in on other shows. I’ve trained enough young directors to be able to understand how to edit and shoot. So they’re able to do a huge page count like I can. I’ve trained them how to watch for waste and time, but it’s very important to know when to let go.”
Tyler has also learned other important life and work lessons like choosing himself. The filmmaker believes that it is the key to living a healthy life.
“I had to learn to choose myself,” Perry revealed. “Because there are people that if you keep trying to drag them up to higher altitudes where they can’t breathe, they will die. Some people have only been equipped in their life with their life lessons or what they’ve learned to go to a certain level.”
Perry also shared why he prioritized taking care of his mom, experiencing a life of homelessness and poverty and why he has continued gratitude for his life today.
“That’s where the grind started. The working so hard started. It was all about, can I take care of her? And what I can say about my audience. If they never did anything else for me, they allowed me to take care of her to the day she died and give her a life that she never imagined,” Perry concluded.
