Tina Knowles is sharing a personal chapter of her life, revealing her recent journey with breast cancer.

During an emotional interview with Gayle King on CBS Mornings (April 22), the mother of Beyoncé and Solange revealed that she had been diagnosed with breast cancer in her left breast.

“I’m getting emotional because I’ve always tried to take care of myself,” Knowles admitted. “I was in total disbelief.”

The 71-year-old explained that she had missed a routine mammogram during the COVID-19 pandemic and initially forgot to reschedule. When she finally went in for a screening last year, doctors discovered two tumors. One was benign, but the other wasn’t.

“It was stage 1, which I thought was the earliest,” Knowles said. “But when I told my sister, she reminded me there’s actually a stage 0. If I’d gone earlier, maybe it would’ve been caught even sooner.” Fortunately, the cancer was small and hadn’t spread—classified as a slow-growing type.

After undergoing a lumpectomy to remove the cancer, Knowles leaned on the strength and support of her family. She recalled feeling nervous on the day of her surgery, but her loved ones—especially her children—lifted her spirits.

“They all showed up at the hospital,” she shared. “Solange even started showing me funny TikToks on her For You Page to lighten the mood. Then they all started singing ‘Walk With Me,’ a hymn we used to perform together. It was so meaningful. I felt like, God’s got me.”

Though her surgery went well, Knowles faced another setback months later: a serious infection nearly kept her from attending Glamour’s 2024 Women of the Year event in October. Despite her daughter Beyoncé encouraging her to rest, Knowles chose to attend, saying the moment was symbolic of reclaiming her voice.

“For so much of my life, I avoided the spotlight,” she said. “I never wanted to take an award or be the center of attention. But this time, I told myself, ‘I deserve this.’”
