TikTok users across the U.S. reported being unable to access the app Saturday night after a message from the company appeared on their screens, confirming the platform’s shutdown ahead of an impending nationwide ban.
“Sorry, TikTok isn’t available right now,” the message read.
“A law banning TikTok has been enacted in the U.S. Unfortunately, that means you can’t use TikTok for now. We are fortunate that President Trump has indicated that he will work with us on a solution to reinstate TikTok once he takes office. Please stay tuned!”
The message then prompted users to either close the app or learn more.
In addition to TikTok becoming inaccessible, the app was also removed from major U.S. app stores Saturday night, making it unavailable for new downloads.
CapCut, a popular video editing app frequently used by TikTok creators, displayed a similar message and also became inaccessible for many U.S. users.
The shutdown follows a tense period of uncertainty for the platform, as the official ban on TikTok is set to take effect Sunday.

President Joe Biden signed a law last year requiring ByteDance, TikTok’s China-based parent company, to sell the platform or face a ban in the U.S.
The legislation, which cited national security concerns over TikTok’s data collection practices, gave ByteDance a deadline to divest its ownership.
After ByteDance failed to meet those demands, the Supreme Court upheld the law on Friday, allowing the ban to move forward.
TikTok has consistently denied accusations that it poses a security risk, maintaining that it has implemented measures to protect U.S. user data. The company previously attempted to challenge the law, arguing that the ban violates First Amendment rights, but those efforts were ultimately unsuccessful.

With over 170 million users in the U.S., TikTok’s shutdown is expected to have a significant impact, particularly on creators and businesses that rely on the app for engagement and revenue.
Many users took to other social media platforms, such as Instagram and X (formerly Twitter), to express their frustration over the shutdown.
“I can’t believe this is actually happening,” one user wrote on X. “TikTok was a huge part of my daily life.”
For content creators, the ban presents a major challenge, as many built their audiences and businesses through the platform’s algorithm and monetization programs.
Some are already shifting their focus to alternatives like Instagram Reels, YouTube Shorts, and Snapchat Spotlight.

It remains unclear whether TikTok will be reinstated in the U.S. The shutdown message referenced former President Donald Trump, who has previously suggested he may work to bring the app back once in office.
However, there is no clear timeline or plan for how that might happen.
In the meantime, some users are searching for ways to bypass the ban, including using VPNs to access TikTok from other countries. However, doing so could come with legal risks.
For now, the platform that revolutionized short-form content creation is no longer accessible to millions of American users.
