London Calling Podcast Yana Bolder
Lil Wayne is undoubtedly one of the most talented artist and witty lyricist of our generation. From his signature lighter flick before spitting a fire verse, to the punchlines we are still trying to connect the dots to, Lil Wayne has solidified himself on the Mount Rushmore of rap. As we celebrate Lil Wayne, our team at RNB Philly curated a list of Lil Wayne’s best projects, mixtapes included! Here we take a look back at his Top 5 projects of all-time.
The seventh studio album from Lil Wayne saw a transformational sound in Hollygrove rapper, maybe hence why he named the album ‘Rebirth’. The entire album sounded nothing like what we were used to hearing with Lil Wayne. With songs like “Drop the world” and “Prom Queen”, we heard more of an pop, alternative style of music from Lil Wayne, which initially received criticism from his core fanbase. As the music began to grow on them, and as we look back over a decade later, we understand that Wayne was ahead of his time and wanted to be experimental with his music because he was bored. That’s what the greats do.
After Lil Wayne had us literally starving for his ninth studio album ‘Tha Carter IV’, he gave us an appetizer with his ‘Sorry for the Wait’ Mixtape. This was Wayne’s way of keeping his fans occupied with some music, spitting fire lyrics over timeless instrumentals such as Rolling In The Deep, Hands Up (My Last), Racks, and Sure Thing.
An essential album from Lil Wayne’s discography, this 2008 album saw Lil Wayne seperate himself head and shoulder from the rest of the competition. With hits such as “A Milli”, “Mrs. Officer”, “Mr. Carter” and “Lollipop”, it was clear that Lil Wayne was a certified hitmaker and had the music to prove it.
Dedication 2 gave Lil Wayne the utmost confidence to say ‘I’m the best rapper alive’. This 2006 Mixtape sequel to ‘Dedication’ gave us Lil Wayne second critically acclaimed Mixtape series. Wayne jumped on tracks with other artists (“Canon”) and proved he was the “Best in the business”. Fans believe his verse over “Spitter”, the 2005 Biggie Smalls, “Spit Your Game” was one of the illest beats Weezy rapped over.
An essential mixtape from the Hollygrove hero, Lil Wayne released ‘No Ceilings’ on Halloween on 2009. This Mixtape is flawless front to back, with no skips, starting off with one of his most infamous freestyles to date, “Swag Surfin”
Lil Wayne said multiple times that he’d retire at the age of 35 or sooner. 2005 was just one of those times. Not knowing the severity of his sentiments, fans not only begged Wayne to continue his immaculate music career, but he put his all into his project like it was his last. Releasing a 22-track, 70+ minute album, Lil Wayne gave us notable hits such as “Fireman”, ‘”Hustler Musik”, and “Shooter”
By far Lil Wayne’s best work is Da Drought 3. Lil Wayne was in prime form in 2007, delivering his most clever punchlines over some of the most instrumentals at the time such as “Mr. Jones” by Mike Jones, “Throw Some D’s” by Rich Boy, and “Upgrade U” by Beyoncé featuring Jay-Z
