Rashida Jones Celebrates Her Father, Quincy Jones, In Heartfelt Instagram Post

Actress Rashida Jones is sharing her memories of her father’s love in a heartfelt post on Instagram. The Parks & Recreation actress is the daughter of Quincy Jones, who passed away on Sunday at the age of 91, and the late Peggy Lipton, best known for her role on the ’70s drama The Mod Squad.

The prolific musician, who produced Thriller the top-selling album of all time with Michael Jackson died last Sunday at his Los Angeles home surrounded by family. Quincy Jones was a dominant cultural force for the last seven decades, working with jazz and pop artists like Frank Sinatra, scoring more than 50 films including In the Heat of the Night and producing three massively successful projects with Jackson. He also founded Vibe magazine, produced the original Color Purple movie, casting Oprah as Sofia, and brought a young rapper named Will Smith to TV on The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air. 

But to Rashida and his seven children with five different mothers, he was Dad.

She posted on her Instagram account about the bond they shared.

“My dad was nocturnal his whole adult life,” Rashida said in the post. “He kept “jazz hours” starting in high school and never looked back. When I was little, I would wake up in the middle of the night to search for him. Undoubtedly, he would be somewhere in the house, composing (old school, with a pen and sheet music). He would never send me back to bed. He would smile and bring me into his arms while he continued to work…there was no safer place in the world for me.

He was a giant. An icon. A culture shifter. A genius. All accurate descriptions of my father but his music (and ALL of his work) was a channel for his love. He WAS love. He made everyone he ever met feel loved and seen. That’s his legacy.

She added, “I was fortunate enough to experience this love in close proximity. I’ll miss his hugs and kisses and unconditional devotion and advice. Daddy, it is an honor to be your daughter. Your love lives forever.”

Rashida produced Quincy, a documentary on her father for Netflix in 2018 where the 27-time Grammy winner was shown keeping a punishing schedule well into his 80s and revealed how much he was impacted by his mother’s struggle with mental illness.
