The NAACP has filed its fourth lawsuit in Georgia to protect thousands of voters’ access to the Ballot Box come Nov. 5. According to a press release, on Wednesday, the Georgia State Conference of the NAACP filed a Motion to Intervene (MOI) in Quinn v. Raffensperger within the United States District Court for the Northern District of Georgia, Atlanta Division. The suit claims that Quinn’s attempts to purge voters from the rolls directly violate the National Voter Registration Act (NVRA).
“Any attempt to revoke our access to the ballot box is an attempt to regress our nation’s progress,” said NAACP President & CEO Derrick Johnson. “We’re not going back. The NAACP is proud to continue supporting our units across the country as we fight to ensure that every eligible voter is able to cast an effective ballot in the 2024 election. It’s about time that democracy works for everybody.”
Earlier this week, the NAACP National Office also supported its Georgia State Conference in filing a motion to intervene (MOI) in state court, seeking to halt the attempted purge of 5,000+ voters in Dekalb County ahead of the Nov. 5 election.
In July, the NAACP urged the DOJ to investigate Georgia’s online voter registration removal practice after the state launched a website that allows individuals to cancel someone else’s voter registration without their knowledge. This was in response to Republican Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger rolling out the Voter Registration Cancellation Portal, which allows people to cancel voter registrations when someone moves out of state or dies without notifying anyone.
The launch of the site was a massive problem as a glitch in the rollout allowed people to access a voter’s date of birth, driver’s license number and last four numbers of a Social Security number, according to AP. This was the same information needed to cancel a person’s registration without their knowledge.
In August, Georgia Republicans used Donald Trump’s election interference propaganda to kick democracy aside by supporting a policy that, among other things, effectively makes it legal for GOP legislators to engage in election interference, as previously reported by NewsOne.
“The ongoing efforts to disenfranchise voters of color threatens the integrity of our elections process,” said Gerald Griggs, President of Georgia State Conference of the NAACP. “We must remain vigilant in protecting every Georgian’s right to vote because our state’s influence has the power to not only influence local outcomes but also the direction of our entire nation. The Georgia NAACP, with the support of our national office, will use every tool necessary to turn out the Black vote and ensure our voices are heard.”
The NAACP also says they plan on spending $20 million to mobilize 14.5+ million Black voters across 12 priority states.
