My First Time: Swae Lee Reveals The Story Behind His Very First Beat

At 31 years old and with just over a decade deep in the game, Rae Sremmurd rapper Swae Lee has done amazing for himself as both a dynamic duo alongside group mate Slim Jxmmi and as a solo star in his own right — it’s still hard to get the catchy hook of “Sunflower” out of your head once it’s there!

Part of that also is credited to his side mission as a producer. Whether co-producing explicit collaborations between Gucci Mane and the artist formerly known as Kanye West, to actually coming up with the signature hook and song title for Beyoncé’s 2016 cultural smash hit, “Formation,” you might be surprised to know the Mississippi-raised hitmaker had a hand in making it all come to fruition.

In this week’s “My First Time,” Swae Lee joins us with a story of where his penchant for production began, which surprisingly enough didn’t sound too “sunny” or
“flowery” if you get what we’re trying to say. “The worst beat you ever heard, like…” says the “Black Beatles” co-writer after doing his best to give an audible example of what it might’ve sounded like. We’re just glad ol’ boy finally learned his way around the early versions of Fruity Loops!
