Not enough women understand what’s happening in their bodies.
I am included in that number as it was only this year – after two decades of experiencing a period – that I learned when a woman is “on her cycle” it actually means she’s in the menstrual phase.
In reality, a woman is always “on her cycle.” The female reproductive system operates on a roughly 28-day cycle comprising four phases – menstrual, follicular, ovulation, and luteal.
A common misconception is that a period marks the end of your cycle. In actuality, it is the first day of your menstrual phase, the first of the four phases. During this phase the uterine lining sheds, if a pregnancy hasn’t occurred, causing bleeding.

Next up is the follicular phase which overlaps with the menstrual phase and ends at ovulation. In the follicular phase, the estrogen hormone rises causing the uterine lining to grow and thicken. Additionally, the follicle-stimulating hormone causes follicles in your ovaries to grow; hence, the name “Follicular Phase.” One of the developing follicles will form a fully mature egg needed for phase three, ovulation. During ovulation, the luteinizing hormone increases, causing your ovaries to release its egg.
In the last phase, the egg travels from the ovary through your fallopian tubes and to your uterus. If the egg becomes fertilized by sperm and attaches itself to your uterine wall (implantation), you become pregnant. If pregnancy doesn’t occur, estrogen and progesterone levels drop and the lining of your uterus sheds, restarting the process.
The menstrual phase can be viewed as an internal reset preparing your body for the next opportunity for pregnancy. You’re likely to experience fatigue, cramps, mood changes, bloating, and acne as hormones in your body fluctuate. For that reason, you want to keep yourself as comfortable as possible. Having pain relief medicine, sanitary products, and rest are a given, but there are a few upgrades that can take the experience from dreadful to bearable.
Enhance your menstrual wellness routine with these “time of the month” must-haves.
During your period it is common to be sensitive to smells. Combat nausea with aromatherapy. Add refreshing essential oils like eucalyptus or mint to a diffuser to engulf your space in a spa-like scent. Alternatively, keep roll-on balls to apply behind the ears and to pressure points throughout the day.
Find relief from bloating, moodiness, headaches, cramps, irregular sleep and other menstrual symptoms with magnesium. Incorporate supplements or magnesium rich foods like nuts, seeds, leafy greens, and whole grains into your diet for a healthier cycle.
The possibility of leaking during menstruation is anxiety inducing. Luckily, brands have proposed a solution with disposable period underwear. Ideal for overnight care, this alternative to extra long pads provides truly full, leak-proof coverage.
Cramps and discomfort are the most dreadful parts of a period. Pain relief patches are designed to offer targeted temporary relief of minor aches and pains associated with that time of the month. Thin and discreet, they are great for girls on the go.
