Day 3 of the federal trial against Sean “Diddy” Combs took a harrowing turn as Casandra Ventura—better known to the world as Cassie—returned to the witness stand.
In what the prosecution has described as central testimony to their sex trafficking and racketeering case, Ventura offered graphic, emotional, and disturbing accounts of an alleged 10-year relationship defined by physical abuse, coercive control, and repeated sexual exploitation.
Ventura’s testimony spanned two days, but it was Wednesday’s session that gripped the courtroom.
Ventura detailed incidents of physical violence, most notably a 2009 episode in which Combs allegedly stomped on her face during an argument in a car and a 2015 altercation in a Las Vegas hotel where she claims she was punched, kicked, and forced to hide in the bathroom. The jury was shown photos of her bruised face and black eyes, which prosecutors say back up her allegations.
But Ventura’s testimony wasn’t limited to physical violence. She described what she called “freak-offs,” non-consensual sexual encounters allegedly orchestrated by Combs and forced upon her repeatedly throughout their relationship. She estimated participating in hundreds of these incidents, saying they only stopped after the couple ended things in 2018. Even then, she claims, the threat of exposure lingered.
Ventura testified that Combs had filmed many of these encounters and later used the footage to manipulate and intimidate her. One example: during a flight argument, Ventura says Combs played the footage and threatened to ruin her career.
One revelation the defense is likely to seize on is the $20 million settlement Ventura received after filing a civil lawsuit against Combs in November 2023. The lawsuit echoed many of the allegations now at the center of this criminal case. When questioned, Ventura confirmed the payout and said she had initially hoped to tell her story through a book, one she approached Combs’ team about purchasing for $30 million, though no payment was made.
The courtroom fell silent when Ventura described the mental and emotional toll these years had taken. She admitted to struggling with opioid dependency during the relationship and broke down as she recounted a terrifying episode in 2023 where flashbacks and suicidal thoughts led her to attempt to walk into traffic—an act prevented only by her husband, Alex Fine.
Beyond her personal experiences, Ventura also described Combs’ alleged abuse of others. She recalled witnessing him punch a male employee, drag a female assistant out of bed, and in one chilling account, threaten a friend of hers by dangling him over a balcony. She also described the fallout from her brief relationship with rapper Kid Cudi (Scott Mescudi), claiming that Combs threatened them both and later alluded to the explosion of Mescudi’s car.
The prosecution leaned into the pattern and timeline, connecting Ventura’s experiences to a broader claim of organized abuse and intimidation. The aim, it seems, is to portray Combs not just as a violent partner but as the head of an enterprise centered on domination and fear.
As her direct testimony ended, Ventura explained why she had written a manuscript: not for profit, she said, but as a form of “trauma therapy”—a way to process the pain and perhaps, one day, help Combs understand what she had endured.
Combs’ defense team is expected to begin cross-examination on Thursday, with proceedings likely to extend into Friday. The goal will be to challenge Ventura’s credibility, draw attention to the financial settlement, and question her motivations—classic defense strategies in cases like this.
Still, her testimony left a mark. At the end of the day, Combs reportedly turned to his family in the gallery and mouthed, “I’m OK.” Meanwhile, Ventura reportedly avoided eye contact with him altogether, her focus fixed on recounting what she says was a decade of private torment now laid bare before the court.
With the defense’s cross-examination ahead, the stakes couldn’t be higher. Ventura’s testimony may have been emotionally devastating, but it’s only one piece of a larger case that could potentially redefine accountability for one of the entertainment industry’s most powerful figures.
