Megan The Stallion: In Her Words is an intimate portrait of Houston’s own Megan Pete — a down-south hottie who was born and bred to become one of the greatest rap icons of a generation. The documentary, which was released on October 31 on Prime Video, shows the super-girl powered artist in her most vulnerable form yet. The film weaves in and out of Megan’s trials and triumphs, from her astronomical rise to superstardom to the depths of depression stemming from two back-to-back tragedies: her mother’s death in 2019 and the 2020 shooting assault at the hands of singer Tory Lanez.
HelloBeautiful caught up with the visionary behind the film, director Nneka Onuorah, about one of the film’s most bombshell reveals: Megan admitted she lied to journalist Gayle King about sleeping with Tory Lanez in a 2022 interview. At the time, speculation surrounding Megan and Tory’s intimate relationship became the focus of social media fodder, taking attention away from Megan’s victimhood. Two years after the interview aired on CBS, Nneka revealed why Megan was finally ready to come forward with the truth.
“I think it was just, we were telling the story as it was. It was great to know that Megan got to share her side of what she was experiencing, and we didn’t hold anything back,” Onuorah told HB. “The film is so raw and so authentic. You get to see our actual conversations as they are. I didn’t even cut the cameras most of the time during our conversations, so that allowed first person access in an honest way.”
That honesty extended into every area of Megan’s healing journey, including brushes with suicidal ideation when famous celebrity peers and social media bullies turned against her at the height of the trial.
“It was important for me to just show how when a Black woman is standing in her power for herself and not for the service of men or anybody else, how that disruption can cause chaos and anger and animosity.” Onuoarah told HB, adding that the social media footage was an important part of the story to give viewers a full picture of the horror Megan was experiencing in real-time.
“I think sometimes people need to see things pushed back into their face, like ‘This is what it looks like when you leave a negative comment on somebody, and here’s the impact it can have on their mental health, because I really want to see that changed,” Onuorah said.
The Emmy-winning director said she hopes that women watching the film feel empowered to “speak the truth,” and to remember that being strong has a range of colors, and it doesn’t always have to look like being superwoman.
“We have a divine power within, and that power and that strength doesn’t always have to look like being tough. It also means being honest about struggling and needing help with your mental health, and that’s okay,” she said.
