GED Section: Why “Toxic Empathy” And Christianity Don’t Mix

“There’s a lot of things you can be without empathy. You can be a bus driver, you can be an airplane pilot, you can be a dentist, you can be a doctor, you can be a teacher, you can be a cafeteria worker, you can be a comedian, you can be a co-host, you can be an actress, you can be an actor, you can be a director, you can be a crossing guard, you can be a mechanic — there are a lot of things you can be without empathy. The one thing you cannot be without empathy — it is absolutely impossible to be without empathy — is a Christian.”

Albeit a long-winded take, those are the words straight from D.L. himself in response to a recent trend being referred to as “toxic empathy.” It managed to get associated with Christianity by way of Allie Beth Stuckey’s 2024 New York Times Best Seller, Toxic Empathy: How Progressives Exploit Christian Compassion.

Pastor Hughley popped out for a bit as he gave his rebuttal to the notion that any form of empathy could be considered as a negative. As you might agree, D.L. reminds us that empathy is in fact our pathway towards understanding the mindset of God Himself. The conversation of course led to the way our government is currently being handled, which came to light recently when Elon Musk told The Joe Rogan Experience podcast that empathy was an “exploit” and more specifically “the fundamental weakness of Western civilization.”
