A lot of Americans believe Elon Musk is racist.
I am no race expert, but if you are trying to prove that your son is not racist, you probably shouldn’t lead with him having Black servants.
But such is life in Trump’s America.
Errol Musk the father of America’s first play cousin, Elon Musk, claimed that all this talk about his son being racist is just “political nonsense.”
When asked about his son’s blatant assault on diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives, Errol Musk claimed in an email to the Washington Post, “We had several Black servants who were their friends.”
Because nothing says, “I’m not racist” like making friends with the indentured servants working in your South African home during apartheid.
That’s because American racism pales in comparison to South African racism. Imagine racism being so embedded in your DNA that you believe “servants” like you. Imagine being so racist that you actually believe the relationship that paid workers had with your son was real. Imagine being so racist that you don’t even have enough self-awareness to call them “Black friends”–the go-to phrase for white Americans.

Since the Musks seem to suffer from a lack of appropriate amounts of self-reflection, Errol continued explaining that during the chokehold that white supremacy had over the Black South African population, Elon Musk had a really great childhood in a “well-run, law-abiding country with virtually no crime at all.”
Can you hear that noise? Nope. It’s just another racist dog whistle that implies that during apartheid South Africa was a “well-run, law-abiding country with virtually no crime at all.”
At this point, I’m ready to throw all the Musks away, but we continue.
Elon has had beef with his father’s story of his upbringing. To hear Elon tell it, he’s a self-made man who didn’t have a helping hand. But his father is like, “he’s lying.” His father imported emeralds from a Zambian emerald mine. Thus, Elon was always wealthy. Elon claims that there is no proof of his father’s story and that he’s a self-made man.

The Daily Beast notes that Elon used to bring up the emerald mine until that story didn’t service him. In a 2014 interview with Forbes magazine he bragged about his father’s work.
“In South Africa, my father had a private plane we’d fly in incredibly dangerous weather and barely make it back. This is going to sound slightly crazy, but my father also had a share in an emerald mine in Zambia. I was 15 and really wanted to go with him, but didn’t realize how dangerous it was.”
But yes, let’s just believe that Elon didn’t grow up privileged and that he isn’t racist. And that his assault on diversity, equity, and inclusion is not about hating…well, diversity, equity, and inclusion.
Hell, we already pretend like the president of the United States isn’t a sexual assault offender who has declared bankruptcy six times and didn’t get sued for refusing to rent to Black people.
If we are one thing in America, it’s good at forgetting something that relates to hating Black people.
