Amerie’s 2005 smash hit “1 Thing” is widely remembered as one of the most iconic R&B songs of the 2000s. But behind its infectious go-go beat and explosive energy is a story of creative defiance and bold self-preservation. In a move that could’ve cost her career, Amerie leaked her own single to keep it out of this artist’s hands. Read more inside.

The song, produced by Rich Harrison (also behind Beyoncé’s “Crazy in Love”), was crafted specifically with Amerie’s raspy vocals, rhythmic delivery, and eclectic taste in mind. Yet, as she recently revealed in a resurfaced interview and Instagram clip, Columbia Records had other plans. The label, which represented both Amerie and J.Lo at the time, was reportedly considering offering the song to Lopez—a more commercially dominant artist—despite it being tailor-made for Amerie.

Sensing the political tides turning against her, Amerie made a daring choice: she leaked “1 Thing” to the public. Her strategy was clear: if fans heard her version first and connected with it, the label couldn’t pull a bait-and-switch. It was a risky gamble, but one that paid off in full.

“1 Thing” exploded onto the charts, peaking at No. 8 on the Billboard Hot 100 and earning Amerie a Grammy nomination for Best Female R&B Vocal Performance. The single went gold, selling over 500,000 copies in the U.S., and cemented her status as a defining voice in 2000s R&B.

More than just a career milestone, “1 Thing” became a case study in the music industry’s recurring marginalization of Black women artists. It also became a symbol of how artists often have to fight tooth and nail for control over their own work.

Amerie’s story isn’t just about preserving a hit, but it’s about betting on yourself when no one else will. Her decision to leak the song not only ensured that her voice would be the one the world heard, but also challenged a music industry often dominated by commercial over artistry.

Nearly two decades later, “1 Thing” still resonates and Amerie’s bold move is one of the reasons we’re still dancing to it.
