A meat recall has been issued for products sold in some of the most popular grocery stores in America over listeria contamination.

Nearly 10 million pounds of product from pre-cooked meat producer BrucePac has been recalled. In new information released yesterday (October 16), through routine testing, BrucePac found evidence of listeria monocytogenes in ready-to-eat poultry.

If ingested, it can cause a listeriosis infection. Listeriosis is a food-borne bacterial infection that can be dangerous or life-threatening to older adults, people with weak immune systems and pregnant people. Symptoms of a listeriosis infection include fever, diarrhea, headache, muscle aches and more. In more severe cases, pregnant people can miscarry and others can die.

At first, the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) and BrucePac released a general warning about the tainted meat and poultry. They later followed up on specific details on products and locations where they are being sold in a 326-page document.

Affected products were distributed nationwide to both stores and restaurants. The meat appears in salads, sandwiches, wraps, frozen meals and other pre-packaged food. The stores listed by the USDA include Walmart, Publix, Target, Aldi, Amazon, Trader Joe’s and more. Affected brands include Fresh Express, Roa’s, Dole, Great Value (Walmart), Amazon Kitchen, Marketside and more. The USDA is continuing to update the list of products and suggests checking FSIS.gov frequently for additional details.

The USDA warns consumers who purchased any affected products to not eat them but to throw them away or return them to the place of purchase. Retailers with the products in stock are advised not to sell them but to throw them out or return them.

Right now, there have been no confirmed reports about anyone getting sick from these products. Anyone concerned about an adverse reaction should contact their healthcare provider.
