Fall has officially arrived, and that means it’s time to enjoy cooler weather, hoodies, warm fires, and delicious drinks reminiscent of the changing of the leaves.
For the majority of America, that means only one thing: pumpkin spice!
From drinks to cookies and everything in between, Fall is the perfect season to go pumpkin spice crazy. Of course, the pumpkin spice craze picked up with the introduction of their pumpkin spice lattes in 2003, becoming its signature fall beverage.
But… what about the folks (like the author of this article) who won’t go anywhere near pumpkin? Well, several alternatives are just as good (or better) than pumpkin spice anything. Here’s a look at some of our favorite recipes!

RECIPE: Pour 6 cups of apple cider and 1/4 cup of real maple syrup into a large stainless steel saucepan. Place 2 cinnamon sticks, 6 whole cloves, 6 whole allspice berries, an orange peel, and a lemon peel (sliced into strips) in the center of washed cheesecloth, fold up the sides to close the bundle, then tie it with kitchen string. Drop the spice bundle into the cider. Heat the saucepan over medium heat until hot, about 5-10 minutes. Throw away the spice bundle and ladle cider into a mug. Feel free to jazz it up with a cinnamon stick or whipped cream with caramel drizzle (see above).
RECIPE: Mix the following in a pot:
7 cups of water
6 tablespoons of light brown sugar (or honey)
1 1/4 inch piece of fresh ginger root, peeled and chopped
1 cinnamon stick
6 green cardamom pods
12 cloves
2 bay leaves
1 tablespoon of fennel seeds (or anise seeds)
1/2 teaspoon of black peppercorns
Cover and boil the pot for 20 minutes. After that, remove the pot from the heat, add 2 tablespoons of Darjeeling tea leaves, and steep for 10 minutes. Next, stir a cup of milk into the mixture and heat to a boil before straining into cups.
RECIPE: In a large pot, mix 3 1/2 quarts of water with a 12oz pack of fresh cranberries. Bring to a boil, reduce heat, and simmer for 30 minutes. After that, mix 2 cups of white sugar, 2 oranges (juiced), 2 lemons (juiced), 12 cloves and 2 cinnamon sticks. Cover and steep for one hour. Use extra cranberries and a cinnamon stick for garnish.
RECIPE: Pour 1 cup of boiling water into a mug, then steep an orange pekoe tea bag in the water for 3 minutes. Add 2 tablespoons of milk, 1 teaspoon of white sugar, a 1/2 teaspoon of vanilla extract, and a 1/2 teaspoon of ground cinnamon. Stir and enjoy.
RECIPE: Bring 1/4 cup of water to a boil in a small saucepan, Add a black tea bag, cover, and remove from the heat. Let it steep for 3-5 minutes. Then remove the tea bag and add 3 tablespoons of white sugar and 2 tablespoons of unsweetened cocoa powder (preferably Dutch-processed). Return to the stove over medium heat and bring to a boil. Mix in 2 cups of milk, a teaspoon of vanilla extract, 1/2 teaspoon of ground cinnamon, and a 1/2 teaspoon of ground nutmeg. Heat, but not to a boil. Pour into mugs, top with whipped cream, and add cinnamon sticks for garnish.
