Boar’s Head expands a recall of its deli and poultry items after a deadly multi-state listeria outbreak. This expanded recall includes an additional 7 million pounds of product.

As of July 30, 34 people have gotten sick across 13 states. That includes 33 people who have been hospitalized and 2 people who died. Those who died were from Illinois and New Jersey.

Last month, Boar’s Head recalled more than 207,000 pounds of deli meat including liverwurst and ham products. In a statement on its website, the company said it initiated the recall after a liverwurst sample collected by the Maryland Department of Health tested positive for listeria.

Listeria is a food borne bacterial illness. According to the Mayo Clinic, it’s most commonly caused by eating improperly processed deli meats and unpasteurized milk products. It’s the third-leading cause of death from food poisoning in the U.S..

The first voluntary recall was for the Strassburger-brand Liverwurst and an additional nine products produced on the same production line at the Boar’s Head Jarratt, Virginia facility.

Now, this expansion includes 71 products including meat that’s supposed to be sliced at delis as well as some packaged meat and poultry products produced from May 10 to July 29 under the Boar’s Head and Old Country-brand names.

The products have “sell by” dates ranging from July 29 through October 17 of this year. They were distributed to retail locations nationwide and some to the Cayman Islands, Dominican Republic, Mexico and Panama.

“We have also decided to pause ready-to-eat operations at this facility until further notice. As a company that prioritizes safety and quality, we believe it is the right thing to do,” the company said in a statement. “No words can fully express our sympathies and the sincere and deep hurt we feel for the families that have suffered losses and others who endured illness.”

Boar’s Head is urging people who bought the recalled products to throw them away or return them to the store. The company also suggests cleaning out refrigerators as the bacteria can grow in cold temperatures therefore spreading to other foods.

An investigation into this outbreak is underway by the FSIS, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and state public health partners.
