Ice Spice — Y2K!
Ice Spice is going on a journey through time with the release of her major label debut album, Y2K! After making waves with a series of smash singles, the Bronx rapper delivers a 10-song body of work featuring the hits “Think U The Sh-t (Fart)” and “Did It First” with Central Cee.
The “Munch (Feelin’ U)” rapper also taps Gunna for “B-tch I’m Packin’” and Travis Scott for “Shhh…” Other songs include “Phat Butt,” “BB Belt,” and “Popa.”
Ice says the album, like the title, reflects a chaotic time. “I was really born into chaos, and I feel like the album sounds very chaotic, in a good way,” she told Rolling Stone. “I just love the Y2K aesthetics as a whole, how people dressed. That’s just my sh-t.”
Ice Spice might be one of the music world’s most celebrated rising stars, but she’s also faced criticism. Her album cover and some of the singles have received mixed reviews, but Ice says she is entering this album with gratitude, no matter what. “I won, bro; I win at life,” she added. “I can only just be grateful for people talking sh-t, for people supporting me. Everything that comes with the territory, I can only be grateful for.”
Mustard — Faith of a Mustard Seed
Mustard is having a big year. After dropping a No. 1 hit single with Kendrick Lamar’s “Not Like Us,” the producer showed off his rap skills on his own single, “Pray for Me.” Now, he unveils a 14-song project, Faith of a Mustard Seed.
Travis Scott appears on the album’s single “Parking Lot.” But Kirk Franklin, Lil Yachty, Vince Staples, ScHoolboy Q and Young Thug are also among those making appearances here. BLXST, Ty Dolla $ign, Roddy Ricch, and Ella Mai also lend their voices here.
Mustard says Nipsey Hussle came up with the album title during one of their studio sessions. Eventually, the producer researched the phrase and found the inspiration for this project.
“Only Faith could have helped me overcome all the obstacles I seen in my life to get me where I am today,” he recently shared on social media. “Thank you to everyone that’s been rockin with me on this journey. Know I’m praying for you so y’all should pray for me too.”
Gordo & Drake — “Sideways” + “Healing”
Drake has been releasing a steady stream of collaborations. In the wake of his Kendrick Lamar feud, the Toronto rapper-singer has unloaded joint cuts with Camila Cabello, Snowd4y, and Sexyy Red. Now, he is teaming up with the producer Gordo for “Sideways” and “Healing.”
“Admit I used to love you, but you were never my girl. It was just my turn. Then it turned sideways,” Drizzy sings on the first of the two collaborations. The hypnotic dance track falls in line with some of his Honestly, Nevermind vibes, as Gordo alluded to in pre-release tweets.
On “Healing,” he adds some melancholy talk to the mix. “I came out tonight and I wanna go home / I’d rather spend some time on my own,” he sings with a somber tone. “I can’t stand small talk, nobody’s real / I look okay but that’s just not how I feel.”
Gordo recently spoke on Drake’s overall mood since the Kendrick feud unfolded. “Ever since all this has happened… I’ve seen him happier,” Gordo told People. “It’s really weird. He’s pretty jolly… The internet makes it seem like, ‘Oh, that photo, he’s all sad and sh-t.’ That’s just a bad photo from a bad camera. But because it’s him, it’s put under a magnifying glass like, ‘Oh, look at his eyes. He’s looking a little droopy. He hasn’t slept.’ But the guy’s been happy as sh-t, to be honest. He’s chilling.”
“Sideways” and “Healing” also appear on Gordo’s new album DIAMANTE, which can be heard below.
Will Smith — Work of Art f. Russ
After making millions at the box office with Bad Boys: Ride or Die, Will Smith is back with a new song. This time around, he’s teaming up with Russ for a new collaboration titled “Work of Art.”
“I am the paint, and I’m the brush, and I’m the canvas,” he raps on the track. “I am a saint, but if you touch, I am a savage.”
Russ follows Will with the second verse. “My soul feels trapped like I’m writing to Bryson Tiller beats / On the road to inner peace, takin’ unfamiliar streets,” he raps. “Trying to kill the beast just made it grow more / My shadow’s haunting me, what you think I’m driving a Ghost for?”
Smith tells Russ the song has been an important milestone in his creative process of late in the song’s music video. “‘Work of Art’ was the song where I found my voice. It was like, that’s how I wanna sound. That’s what I wanna talk about,” he says in the clip. “That is the fullness of who and what I actually am.”
Rakim — G.O.Ds NETWORK – (REB7RTH)
Rakim, one of Hip-Hop’s most iconic rappers, returns to the scene with a rebirth of sorts. This time, the legend unveils a star-studded album, G.O.Ds NETWORK – (REB7RTH).
The R comes with plenty of familiar guests as well over the course of seven tracks. Nipsey Hussle, Snoop Dogg, DMX, Prodigy, Method Man, and Kurupt are among the album’s guests.
Rakim opens “Love is the Message,” one of the new singles, with some of the thoughtful rhyming he’s known and loved for. “Can you see what I’m seeing or are you distracted by the poverty stricken streets of deep depression that we in?” Rakim asks.”I see survivors of the worst conditions to be in / You see deceivin’, the demons, the death, and the grievin’ / No place to raise a seed in / But the rose still grows though the crack left in the cement.”
