Joy is coming out of heartache for a New Zealand couple who used their wedding to raise awareness about ovarian cancer.

Back in 2020, Jony Lee was gearing up to marry her husband Alistair Lee when she learned her mom’s cancer returned. This time, Lee’s mom, Luna Macapagal, was concerned about losing her hair. Lee told her mom she would shave her head in solidarity.

She found a way to make the moment special and raise money charity at the same time. During the Lee’s wedding reception, the bride and groom scrapped a traditional Filipino wedding dance where people pin money to the bride and groom’s clothes in favor of shaving their heads and asking guests to donate to a cancer organization.

“It lined up perfectly because we knew culturally everyone would have cash,” Lee told Today. “It’s like, ‘OK instead of taking this money for ourselves why don’t we just give back to the community that helped my mom.’”

When the dance was supposed to begin, Lee took the mic and shared how much she loved her mom. Lee told guess if they wanted to give the couple money, they could donate it to a cancer charity. She then grabbed a pair of clippers and started shaving her new husband’s head. When she was done, he shaved his new wife’s head. The guests had no idea this would happen. The room was overflowing with emotion.

“I was doing it for my mom,” she said. “Cancer affects everyone you know. It affects your coworkers, your aunts, your uncles, cousins, boyfriends, girlfriends and so on and so on. There’s so many people who have been affected by it that I didn’t realize the impact of it.”

While Lee said she didn’t have the best relationship with her mom growing up, she feels this gesture shows how their relationship evolved over time. Macapagal ended up dying from ovarian cancer back in 2021. But, her spirit lives on in her daughter and the gesture touched millions of people around the world, going viral on TikTok with more than five million likes.

“For it to take her getting sick for me to realize and mend that relationship, it feels a bit s—–,” she said. “When I look back on it, it reminds me that with all the relationships that I have now I need to make sure I value them.”
