A Mexican court has detained a Michigan couple in a maximum-security prison since March 4 over a disputed credit card charge. Authorities arrested Paul and Christy Akeo at Cancun International Airport after Palace Resorts accused them of defrauding the company of over $100,000. The couple insists American Express ruled in their favor, believing the issue was resolved before their trip.

Their daughter, Lindsey Hull, has voiced frustration over their limited communication and prolonged detention. She claims Palace Resorts broke its contract and retaliated against her parents. Hull has only spoken to her mother during brief, monitored calls and has not heard from her stepfather, Paul.

From FOX 8:

Local Mexican outlets reported that the Akeos have been charged with defrauding a Cancun hotel chain out of more than $100,000, alleging they signed a contract in Nov. 2021 to purchase a membership with the hotel, giving a credit card for the hotel to charge the monthly payments to.

The family has hired lawyers in both the U.S. and Mexico while urging U.S. officials to intervene. U.S. Representative Tom Barrett has collaborated with the State Department and White House to push for their release.

A Mexican court recently granted Palace Resorts six more months to gather evidence, leaving the Akeos uncertain about their future. Hull continues to raise awareness and pressure officials, fearing for her parents’ safety.
