The walls of Abyssinian Baptist Church in Harlem shook as Lauryn Hill delivered a resounding rendition of “Killing Me Softly” in honor of the late Roberta Flack at her public memorial service on March 9. Backed by Wyclef Jean on harmonica, Lauryn’s voice soared through the sanctuary, reflecting Flack’s legacy, sound, and impact.
The rendition felt deeply spiritual.
The congregation—filled with friends, family, and musical legends—rose to their feet and stayed standing completely during Lauryn’s heartfelt tribute. She was one of several celebrities – in person and virtual – there to show how Roberta Flack touched the world.
The choice of “Killing Me Softly” couldn’t have been more perfect. First recorded by Flack in the early 1970s, the song became one of her most defining records, earning her a Grammy for Record of the Year in 1974. Then, decades later, Lauryn Hill and The Fugees reintroduced it to a new generation, turning it into a hip-hop classic.
As Lauryn sang each line, her voice reverberated with grief, grace, and gratitude. Her presence at the public memorial service reminded attendees just how much Flack’s work influenced her career and that of many other artists.
To that end, the memorial brought out some of the most respected voices in entertainment and culture. Reverend Al Sharpton delivered a moving eulogy, Stevie Wonder performed after Lauryn and Wyclef, and Alicia Keys, Dionne Warwick, and India.Arie were among the virtual celebrity tributes.
In the days following her passing, celebrity condolences flooded social media. Kelly Rowland, Jennifer Hudson, and Questlove were among the many leading music voices who paid their respect. Each mentioned Roberta’s voice, artistry, and profound influence on culture.
It is clear that Roberta Flack leaves behind a lasting legacy. She passed away at the age of 88 on February 24, 2025.
