Megan Thee Stallion is reclaiming her narrative in her new Prime Video documentary, Megan Thee Stallion: In Her Words, now available for streaming. The film delves into the aftermath of her traumatic 2020 shooting and the challenges she faced on her journey to stardom, sparking significant conversation online.
One poignant takeaway from the documentary is the profound influence of her mother, Holly Thomas, on Megan’s rap career. Between 2001 and 2007, Holly performed as the rapper Holly-Wood, and Megan often listened to her mother create music in the studio, which inspired her own artistic development. Tragically, the Grammy-award-winning artist lost her mother in March 2019 to an aggressive brain tumor following “back-to-back seizures,” as reported by People.
“They had to put her under. She was just brain dead,” the “WAP rapper shared in the emotional doc. “So I stayed up there every day. I was spending the night at the hospital. I just was praying that she could shake back from it.”
Megan was forced with the difficult decision of taking her mother off of life support after doctors informed her she would not be able to recover.
“Once I realized she wasn’t coming back, I was just like, ‘Damn, I can’t keep her like this.’ Because I know she wouldn’t have wanted to stay like this,” Megan said as she teared up. “So I had to make the decision to pull the plug, and she just passed the next day.”
This loss has undoubtedly shaped Megan’s journey and her powerful narrative. During the October premiere of her new documentary, the rapper gave a shout-out to her mother for teaching her how to be a strong and resilient woman.
“I wouldn’t be the woman I am today without Holly Thomas. So mommy, I love you,” she told fans.
After her mother’s passing, Megan leaned on her former best friend, Kelsey Nicole Harris, as she struggled with feelings of confusion and lost confidence. Megan described Kelsey as “family” and her “best friend,” but that bond began to shift following her highly publicized shooting trial against Tory Lanez.
On the night of the incident, Kelsey was in the car and later testified about her presence during the shooting, although she characterized her memories of that night as “blurry.” Harris did not confirm whether she witnessed Lanez shoot the gun during the incident. She also revealed that she had been intimate with Lanez before Megan’s sexual involvement with the rapper.
Megan expressed that watching Kelsey’s behavior during the trial was difficult for her. “She just really disappointed me and let me down. I would never let somebody like that drag my best friend,” the “Body” hitmaker said.
During her testimony in 2022, Megan claimed that Kelsey and Lanez met up to “turn the story around” after the shooting to maintain their innocence. While Harris denied accepting hush money from Lanez after the shooting, Megan asserted that he offered them money for their silence.
Megan finally explained why she misled Gayle King about her sexual involvement with Lanez during their 2022 CBS Mornings interview. In their candid conversation, Gayle pressed her about a potential relationship with the rapper, which Megan denied. The response was quickly met with skepticism and backlash from social media users and prosecutors during the trial, many of whom accused her of lying and undermining her credibility.
In the documentary, Megan acknowledged that she hadn’t been entirely honest during the interview, admitting that she had been intimate with Lanez a few times while under the influence of alcohol. However, she stressed that this did not justify the violence she endured. Ultimately, she viewed the scrutiny of her personal life as a distraction from the harsh reality of her injuries.
Megan has also faced significant mental health challenges, including performance anxiety and suicidal thoughts after the shooting and during the trial. The relentless harassment—complete with death threats and cruel comments suggesting Lanez should have “finished the job”—heightened her fears for her safety, particularly in public settings. This ongoing stress led her to feel paralyzed at times and grapple with dark thoughts. “I would rather not live through this than to have to live with this,” she recalled.
In 2022, following a break-in at her home, while she was performing on SNL, she decided to take a step back from her career and spent a month in a mental health retreat. That same year, the Houston native launched a website called “Bad Bitches Have Bad Days Too,” aimed at providing mental health resources for fans in need. The site includes a list of free therapy organizations and links to national crisis hotlines, offering extensive support for mental health and substance abuse. It also features resources tailored to Black and LGBTQ community members, including directories like the LGBTQ Psychotherapists of Color and Therapy for Black Girls, as well as the StrongHearts Native Helpline for those affected by domestic abuse and sexual violence.
When Lanez was convicted in 2022, Megan found herself in tears. The documentary captures the moment she anxiously awaited the trial’s outcome at home with her family. Upon learning that Lanez had been found guilty, she broke down, saying, “Thank you, God.” Despite his 10-year prison sentence handed down in August 2023, Megan revealed that she continued to face backlash from people upset with her for sharing her story.
“I do feel like I’m getting to a place where I really don’t care. For the first time since my mom was alive I’m taking care of myself because I want to feel good,” the Houston rapper said.
Meanwhile, Lanez is actively seeking to overturn his conviction.
