Within the span of three weeks, Florida residents faced two Category 4 hurricanes and an unprecedented number of tornadoes. The aftermath has been especially stressful as people grapple with loss, uncertainty, and the daunting task of recovery.
Dr. Meghan Martin, pediatric emergency medicine physician at Johns Hopkins All Children’s Hospital in St. Petersburg, told NBC News her home has flooded three times in the past four years, starting with Hurricane Idalia in late August 2023.
“There’s a lot of people feeling that anxiety, feeling the stresses, compounding with two different storms so close together,” Martin said.
While her home survived Milton’s destructive flooding, she’s unsure what to do next.
“I do feel drained. I’m exhausted,” Martin, who has been in the hospital working with the emergency operation center through the storm, said. “Obviously we need to make some changes, because we can’t keep going through this. My mental health cannot handle that.”
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention the emotional responses that follow natural disasters are caused by the phenomenon called “common reactions to abnormal events.” Understanding how to manage this stress is crucial for emotional well-being.
Here are some strategies to help you cope in the wake of a hurricane.
Isolation can exacerbate the stress caused by hurricanes. Reach out to friends, family, or support groups in your community. Many communities set up local support groups following disasters, providing a space to connect and share recovery resources. Don’t hesitate to lean on your social network.
After a hurricane, life can feel chaotic and uncertain. Establishing a daily routine can create a sense of normalcy amidst the turmoil. Routines can help structure your day, providing small milestones that contribute to a sense of stability.
In the wake of a hurricane, many factors may feel beyond your control. Focus instead on what you can manage. This might include creating a plan for recovery, reaching out to local resources, or organizing your immediate environment. Taking small, actionable steps can empower you and alleviate feelings of helplessness.
While staying informed is important, excessive media consumption can heighten anxiety. Limit your intake of news and social media related to the disaster, especially if it feels overwhelming. Set specific times for checking updates, and focus on credible sources for information.
Self-care is essential during stressful times, allocate time for activities that bring you joy and relaxation. Make sure to prioritize your physical and mental well-being. Engage in activities that relax and rejuvenate you, whether it’s reading, taking walks, or practicing mindfulness techniques like meditation or deep-breathing exercises. Regular physical activity, even in short bursts, can significantly reduce stress levels and improve your mood.
Dealing with the aftermath of a hurricane – or any traumatic event – is a layered process. While the journey to recovery can be challenging, remember that you are not alone. By taking proactive steps to manage your stress, you can navigate this difficult time more effectively and emerge stronger on the other side.
