Ruth Onley attributes her longevity, living to see 110 years of life, to family history and her strong relationship with God.

Onley was born in 1914 in Weverton, Maryland where she spent her years assisting families in their homes until she settled down and had a family of her own with her late husband, Robert Onley. Although Onley and Robert’s marriage was short lived due to his passing at an early age, she never had to worry about being alone, thanks to her large family. With five children of her own, Onley has lived to become a grandmother to 15, great-grandmother to 50, great-great grandmother to 25, and great-great-great grandmother to two.

While reaching Onley’s age is not an everyday occurrence, her family and God have played a huge role in keeping her young at heart as the years pass by. Onley credits her health and wellness to the care and concern she receives from her children. “It’s the way my children take care of me,” she told TODAY.com.

Aside from her strong relationship with family, her faith in God has enriched both her outlook and her longevity. “[God] told me my days were all numbered. But he didn’t tell me the number,” Onley said.

Despite her age, Onley is young is spirit and still enjoys the quality of life by engaging in activities she loves most, such as good eats, playing games, crocheting, and watching game shows on television. Onley’s children make it a routine to spend several days with her overnight each month, similar to the routine Onley shared with her father when she was young.

What Onley wants people to know if a quote from “Amazing Grace” by John Newton: “Through many dangers, toils, and snares, I have already come. The Lord hath brought me safe thus far, and the Lord will lead me home.”
